Last July 3, 2016, I started my weight loss journey. Why? Because my cousin, Kirk Kierulf, pointed out that my weight was getting out of control. But I didn’t care nor bothered to take action until I subjected myself to the ultimate test: The weighing scale. Stepping on the scale, I can say that I have never been shocked by any news in my entire life. At 21 years old, standing at 5’6, I weighed a whopping 225 pounds! WHAAAAAT!? For real?? (I wished I was kidding, but three weighing scales proved me this.) So, yes, this is deadass real. My BMI (Body Mass Index) concluded that I was not average, not above average — heck, definitely not underweight but…. *Drum roll please*….. Obese.
*Cue Ang Probinsyano Theme Song* Kung walaaaaa ka naaaaang maiiiiintindihaaan — Ang sakit, bes. Hindi ko rin naintindihan kung paano ako umabot dito.
But looking back, I knew deep down how I reached this point — ignorance. All throughout my life, I have been a chubby “masustansya” person. This worked well for me since I would often be described as CUTE by my family and relatives… and also by my preschool crushes. (I used to look like Jigglypuff from Pokemon. No joke <3) So, I used this excuse to ignore my health — even bringing this mindset with me until early adulthood. And thus, I ate a lot of unhealthy food. These include all types of fried, junk, processed, salty, sweet, and everything between. In the long run, this did not only take a toll on my health physically but also emotionally.
Around my teen years, I started to become insecure and little by little I fell into depression. Seeing my friends so confident, happy, and healthy made me hate myself more and the only thing that comforted me was food. And lucky enough, I met two of my closest friends who kept me company during those dark times. They were Lays and Doritos. <3 They were my constants, especially during midnight. Hehe.
But that relationship, however good it was, had to come to an end — and so did my relationship with unhealthy food. Along with this was the beginning of a new relationship; one with myself. It’s a relationship that would not only become beneficial for me but would also pay off in the long term.
The Journey
Before I ventured into this weight loss journey, I was very scared. I asked myself a lot of “what if” questions. What if I fail? What if I decide to quit? What if I can’t handle the pain and struggles that come along? What if? What if? What if? As I was filling my mind with all these negativities, I suddenly remembered a quote that I came across way back in high school.
“All that we are is a result of what we have thought.” - Buddha
Perhaps the reason why I ended up here in the first place is because of how I perceived myself in the past. If I change the way I think, then maybe I would have become a different person today.
So, I tried to put this thought into action. So far, so good. One year ago, I was 225 pounds. Right now, coming off with a whole new perspective in life, I now weigh 160 pounds.
How did I do this?
Proper diet and regular exercise. My diet consisted of healthy carbs (brown rice, oatmeal, wheat bread), high protein viands (lean beef, lean ground beef, chicken breast, eggs, etc.) and fruits and vegetables. For my exercise, I hit the weights and did cardio 5x per week. For my gym workouts, I downloaded an app called “Jim Stoppani’s Shortcut to Shred”.
For my cardio workouts, I did either a combination of 30-60 minute treadmill sessions (consisting of walks, jogs and sprints) or High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) ***(THIS IS THE REAL DEAL! CHECK THIS OUT IF YOU WANT AN INTENSE ULTRA-MEGA-FAT-BURNING WORKOUT IN JUST 20 MINUTES. Here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZnsLVArIt8) So this is basically what I’ve been doing up until today.
But of course, I wasn’t always consistent with my diet and exercise. For example, there were days that I skipped or felt tired and lazy to workout. I realized it’s okay. What’s important is you come back again ASAP which is the day after. Also, trust me when I say that it’s totally fine to have a cheat day once per week! Back then, when I would lose 1-2 pounds per week, me and my cousin, Kirk, would celebrate this off by pigging out at Zark's Burgers or at any buffet e.g. Vikings: Luxury-Buffet Restaurant, Sambokojinkin, etc. (Lol @shameless plug) on a Sunday! (Pag may budget) Personally, it helped me become more locked on with my goal since I felt like I wasn’t depriving myself too much, plus I had something to look forward after a week’s gruelling workout.
In a year’s span, these are some take away’s that I hope I could impart to those who are also willing to start their journey:
1. Track your daily calorie intake 2. Track your weekly progress3. Sunday is cheat day!!! (FUN FUN FUN <3) 4. PATIENCE.
1. Tracking one’s calorie intake varies with every person. Basing from an article I found online, in order to lose weight, you have to consume less than your daily caloric maintenance. So for me, whose goal is to lose weight, I was required to integrate some Math into my diet. (Don’t worry, it’s just basic! And that’s coming from someone who HATES Math and barely passed it in high school and college LOL.) So the formula for one’s caloric intake is: 16 x (Your current weight) - 500. SEE. EASYYY! When i first started, my daily caloric intake was 16 cals x 225 pounds - 500 cals = 3, 100 calories per day. As long as I was not exceeding this number of calories per day, I was basically losing weight. (And you just adjust every week as you continue to lose weight.)
2. Tracking weekly progress. Small things in the long run can yield to BIG RESULTS. Every week, I would monitor the amount of weight I lost. Imagine losing 1-2 pounds per week (and that’s average). In a month, that’s 4-8 pounds of fat. To help you in visualizing how HUGE this is, I HIGHLY recommend you watch this video (like legit): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC0STEq3mv4
3. Sunday is cheat day. Yes, go forth and enjoy thyself!!!
4. Stay patient and trust your journey. There will be a lot of challenges along the way, but in the end, it will all be worth it.
Today marks my 1st anniversary after saying YES to the challenge. 365 days after, 65 pounds lighter, 8 inches off my waist, I stand here in pride to say that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.
