Old Sword Inside An Old Well Found By A Plymouth Man
Colin Steer moved to his Victorian home in Plymouth 24 years ago when he saw something strange on the floor and was since then curious about it.
According to Mr. Steer, he was replacing the joists in the floor when he noticed a slight indention and it looks like it is filled with the foundation of the house.
Mr. steer said, "I dug down about one foot and saw that it was a well, but my wife just wanted to me to cover it back up because we had three children running around at the time. I always wanted to dig it out to see if I could find a pot of gold at the bottom, so when I retired at the end of last year that’s what I did."
Steer spent three days trying to clean and clear up the old well by using a bucket and a rope to pull up the debris and while he was doing that he reaches about 5 feet down the well when he discovered an old sword.
He said that "It was hidden at a 45-degree angle and sort of just fell out. It looks like an old peasant’s fighting weapon because it appears to be made up of bits of metal all knocked together."
He believes that the well is at least 35 feet deep but he stopped digging it up at 17 feet.
Mr. Steer did some research into its history hoping that he find more information about it and find someone to date it.
For the time being Mr. Steer has turned the well into a little museum-like feature by putting lighting and installing a trap-door over it.
He said that "I love the well and think it’s fascinating. I’d love to find out who was here before us. I’ve got a piece of Plymouth’s history in my front room."
