Hidden Mural Found After 50 Years Inside A Church
A hidden mural was discovered in a Coventry church when the wall was knocked down as part of plans to turn the building back into a community church this year. The mural is nearly hidden for 50 years.
Behind the wall, we can see a painting of Jesus with wounds from the crucifixion ascending to heaven. Architects Paul and Robinson built St Mark. During the World War Two, the west window was shattered in one of the raids.
A brick wall was built to cover the gap because the parish couldn't afford to replace the window, and in 1963 the mural was painted by Feibusch to decorate the wall.
Feibusch is the one who painted Jesus on the wall he had left Germany in 1930s to escape the Holocaust. He was the last surviving artist included on Goebbels' infamous list of 'degenerate artists' before his death in 1998 at the age of 99. He settled in Britain and became known for his public art including murals in churches.
St Mark's, which is in Foleshill in the north of Coventry, is set to become a 'city center resource church' with a particular focus on people aged 18 to 30.
'We were asked by the Bishop of Coventry to reopen the church', said Rev Phil Atkinson, who has moved from Oxford to Coventry to take charge.
'We are going to reach out to young people and students.'
The Coventry Society said: 'Feibusch's work is now recognized as being of national importance.
'In 2011 the Coventry Society noted that the listing particulars for the building did not include the mural.
