It was one mode of transportation introduced to the islands in the 18th century by Spanish colonizers and was initially reserved for only nobles and high-ranking civic officials. Kalesa today are rarely used in the streets except in the tourist-frequented areas of old cities and some rural areas.

Horse collapsed in front Sta Cruz Church, Manila. Are 200 pesos really worth this gentle creatures daily torment of busy streets, the endless carrying of passengers in hot weather, and eventual death from exhaustion? Please NEVER support horse carriages or industries that exploit animals.
